Kollu rasam recipe with step by step pictures
Kollu rasam is a healthy rasam recipe. It is an accompaniment for rice. Kollu rasam is good for cold and cough. My mom cooks for me whenever i got cold from my childhood. This rasam gives you great relief from cold and cough. I cook this rasam whenever my family members is sick. This rasam is little thick in consistency compared to other rasam.
Usually this rasam can be made with the broth of kollu paruppu and tamarind water. The cooked kollu paruppu is used to make Kollu thuvaiyal. Kollu paruppu is good for people who tries to loss weight . So cook this once in two weeks if you are making it for kids.

Ingredients :
. Kollu paruppu / horse gram - 3 tblsp
. Tomato - 1 small sized
. Garlic cloves - 4 nos.
. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
. Tamarind - 1 small gooseberry sized
. Cumin seeds - 2 tsp
. Black pepper - 1 tsp
. Dry red chilli - 1
. Curry leaves - 1 sprig
. Salt to taste
. Jaggery - 1/2 tblsp
. Oil - 2 tsp
. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
. Hing - 1/2 tsp
. Coriander leaves - 1 tblsp (finely chopped)
Method :
1. Wash the kollu paruppu and take it in pressure cooker along with tomato, garlic and turmeric powder. Pressure cook for 4 whistles.
2. After pressure releases, take the broth separately. Soak tamarind and make tamarind water.
3. Take cumin seeds, black pepper, dry red chilli, curry leaves and cooked tomato and kollu paruppu in a mixer jar.
4. Grind it to a smooth paste. Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds and hing. After it crackle, add ground paste. Give it a mix and add tamarind water.
5. Add cooked broth and adjust the consistency by adding water. Add salt and cook for 5 mins.
6. Add jaggery and cook for a min. Switch off the stove. Add coriander leaves. Healthy kollu rasam is ready.

Wash the kollu paruppu and take it in a pressure cooker.
Add tomato, garlic and turmeric powder
Add 1 cup of water
Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles
Separate the broth
Take 1 tblsp of cooked kollu for rasam and the remaining is used to make Kollu thuvaiyal by adding some sauteed shallots and dry ingredients
In the meantime, soak tamarind in hot water
Make tamarind water
Take cumin seeds, black pepper, dry red chilli and curry leaves in a mixer jar
Add 1 tblsp of cooked kollu paruppu and tomato
Grind it to a smooth paste
Heat oil in a kadai
Add mustard seeds and hing
After it crackle, add ground paste
Give it a mix and add tamarind water
Add broth of kollu paruppu
Add water to adjust the consistency and add salt. ( this rasam is little thick as we have added ground paruppu)
Cook for 5 mins. Add jaggery
Cook for a min. Switch off the stove. Add coriander leaves.
Tasty, healthy kollu rasam is ready to be served
