Rava upma recipe with step by step pictures 


              Rava upma is a south-indian breakfast recipe.  It is a quick and easy recipe.  Whenever I had less time to cook,  i just go for this rava upma.  I hear that most of the people hate upma.  I dont know why.  Rava upma tastes soo good if it is cooked in right way. 
     
           The tricks to make tasty and soft rava upma are:
   1.  Dry roast rava until aroma comes out. 
   2.   Add 3 cups of water to 1 cup of rava. 
   3.  Adding ghee into water. 
   4.  Add 1/2 tblsp of sugar which enhances the taste. 
   5.  Checking for salt before adding rava. 
   6.  Stir continuosly while adding rava into water to avoid lumps. 


           Rava upma can be served with coconut chutney or whatever combination do you like.  I made rava upma several times and got this right recipe. Hope you try it and let me know how it turns out to you.

Ingredients  :

.  Rava / sooji - 1 cup 
.  Water - 3 cup 
.  Oil - 2 tblsp 
.  Mustard seeds  - 1 tsp 
.  Urad dal - 1 tsp 
.  Bengal gran/chana dal - 1 tsp 
.  Curry leaves  - 1 sprig 
.  Green chilli - 1 ( finely chopped)
.  ginger - 1 inch piece ( finely chopped) 
.  dry red Chilli - 2 
.  cashew nuts - 6 (optional )
.  onion - 1 medium sized ( finely chopped )
.  salt to taste 
.  Sugar - 1/2 tblsp 
.  Ghee - 2 tsp 
.  Coriander leaves  - 1 tblsp (finely chopped)


Method : 

           1.  Dry roast rava in a kadai until aroma comes out. Keep it aside. 
           2.  Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds, urad dal and bengal gram.  After it crackle,  add curry leaves, green chilli, ginger, dry red Chillies and cashews. 
          3.  Saute for few secs.  Add chopped onion.  Saute until it becomes soft. 
          4.  Add water.  Add salt, sugar and ghee. Check for salt. 
         5.  After it gets roll boil,  add roasted rava by stirring continuosly to avoid lumps. 
         6.  Cover with lid and cook in low flame for 2 min. Mix well. Add chopped coriander leaves. Switch off the flame.  Serve. 


Pictorial : 

          1) Take rava in a kadai.

        5) Saute for a min.  Add chopped onion. 


       6) Saute until it becomes soft. 


       7) Add water. 


      8) Add salt. 


       9) Add sugar. 


      10) Add ghee. 


       11) Mix well.  Check for salt. Let it comes to roll boil. 


       12) Add roasted rava. 


         13) stir continuosly while adding to avoid lumps. 


        14) Cover with lid and cook in low flame for 2 min. 


       15) mix well.  Add coriander leaves. Switch off the flame. 


       16) Serve.
