Tomato rasam

Tomato rasam with step by step pictures  


              Tomato rasam is very good for health.  In south Indian vegetarian thalis,  rasam is an important dish.  

              In our tradition,  for every functions we make varieties of dishes that includes rasam.  My mom used to give me this rasam with boiled rice whenever I was sick.  It is very easy to digest.  For me,  instead of many rasam,  i like this tomato rasam because it gives soupy feel to me.  Try this. 


Ingredients:

.  Tomatoes  - 3 medium sized
.  Tamarind  - 1/2 lemon sized 
.  Asofoetida/ hing - 1/2 tsp 
.  Coriander leaves  - 2 tsp ( chopped )
.  Oil  - 2tsp 
.   Mustard seeds  - 1 tsp 
.  Salt to taste 

To grind:

.  Garlic cloves  -  6 nos. 
.  Dry red Chillies  -  2 
.  curry leaves  -  1 sprig 
.   Cumin seeds  -  2 tsp 
.   Black pepper corns  -  1 tsp 

Method :

       1.   In a bowl,  put the tomatoes,  tamarind and 1/2 cup of water.  Boil it for 2 mins. 

     2.   After it gets cooled,  add 1 cup of water and smash the tomatoes.  Remove the skins of tomatoes and seeds of tamarind.  Keep the tomato tamarind water aside. 

   3.   In a mixer jar,  grind the ingredients that are given.  Keep it aside .

   4.   Heat oil in a kadai. 

   5.   Add mustard seeds,  asofoetida. 

   6.   When the mustard seeds splutters,  add the grounded mixture.  Saute for 10 secs. 

   7.   Add the tomato tamarind water to it. 

   8.   Add turmeric powder and salt .

   9.   Boil for 30 secs and switch off the flame.  Add coriander leaves. 

   10.   Serve with boiled rice.

Note:

       1.   Do not boil for more than 30secs. 
       2.   I usually boil the tomatoes to peel the skins.  Its easy to mash it.
