Dal fry recipe/ restaurant style dal fry/ tatka dal recipe

Dal fry recipe with step by step pictures 


               Dal fry is a south Indian recipe served with steamed rice.  It is also a good accompainment for chapathi too.  It is commonly known as tatka dal because it is made with simple tatka to the cooked dal.  It is very easy and tasty recipe and it does not take much time to cook.  I have added moong dal and chana dal in this recipe to increase the taste of it.  You can simply made it with toor dal alone. Hope you like it and give it a try.  Lets get to the recipe.

Ingredients  :

.  Toor dal - 3/4 cup 
.  Chana dal - 1/4 cup ( optional )
.  moong dal - 3 tblsp ( optional )
.  turmeric powder  - 1 tsp 
.  Mustard seeds  - 1 tsp 
.  Urad dal - 1 tsp 
.  Cumin seeds - 1 tsp 
.  Onion - 1 medium sized ( finely chopped )
.  tomato - 1 small ( finely chopped )
.  ginger - 2 inch pieces ( chopped)
.  Garlic cloves  - 4 ( chopped)
.  curry leaves - 1 sprig 
.  green chilli - 3 (slited)
.  kasuri methi - 1 tsp 
.  Coriander leaves to garnish 
.  Salt to taste 
.  oil - 2 tblsp 

Method  :

      1. Pressure cook dal for 4 whistles.  Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds, urad dal,  cumin seeds.  
        2.  After crackle,  add ginger,  garlic,  onion,  curry leaves and green chillies. Saute until soft.  Add tomato,  saute for a min. 
       3.  Add cooked dal, Salt and required water.  Cook for 10 min in medium flame. 
      4.  Add crushed kasuri methi and chopped coriander leaves.  Switch off the flame.  Serve. 


Pictorial :

          1) Take dal in pressure cooker. 


         2) Wash it throughly. 


         3) Add water and turmeric powder .


        4) Pressure cook for 4 whistles. 


        5) After pressure releases,  mash it with a laddle( maththu).  


        6) Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds,  urad dal and cumin seeds. 


         7) After it splutters,  add chopped ginger,  garlic,  onion,  green chillies and curry leaves. 


        8) Saute until onion becomes translucent. Add chopped tomato .


        9) Saute for a min. Add mashed dal. 


             10) Add required water. 



           11) Add salt. Cook for 10 min in medium flame. 


         15) Add crushed kasuri methi and chopped coriander leaves . Switch off the flame. 



         16) Serve. 

Note :

         1.  I have added 3 green chillies only as i cooked for my kids too.  If you want   you can add some dry red Chillies in this recipe. 
         2.  Adding kasuri methi gives you nice aroma and taste.  It is optional.
