Drumstick sambar recipe with step by step pictures
Drumstick sambar is a recipe from south Indian cuisine. Sambar can be made with many vegetables like carrot, beans, chow chow, raddish, okra, pumpkin, etc,.
But I like drumstick sambar very much. It has nice aroma of its own.
This recipe is my mother's method of making sambar. Very easy and tasty. This sambar can be a sidedish for idli, dosa for breakfast also. I don't add tamarind pulp to it. If you want, you can add that too. Try this method.
Ingredients :
. Toor dal - 1 cup
. Drumsticks - 3 ( chopped 2 inch size)
. onion - 1 big onion ( chopped lengthwise)
. tomato - 2 medium ( chopped lengthwise)
. sambar powder - 2tblsp
. Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
. Oil - 2 tblsp
. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
. Urad dal - 1 tsp
. Curry leaves - 1 sprig
. Dry red Chilly - 2
. Asoefoetida - 1/2 tsp
Method :
1. pressure cook dal for 4 whistles. Mash it and keep it aside.
2. In a kadai, add 2cup of water, chopped drumsticks, tomato and sambar powder. Cook until drumsticks are half cooked.
3. Add the mashed dal to it. Add salt. Cook for 5 minutes .
4. In a pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds urad dal, asoefoetida . After it splutters, add dry red Chillies, curry leaves and onion.
5. Saute until onion becomes translucent.
6. Add the seasoning into dal. Cook for 5 minutes.
7. Serve.
Pictorial :

4) Add mashed dal. Cook for few more minutes .
5) Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, urad dal and asoefoetida.
6) After it splutters, Add onion, curry leaves and dry red Chillies.
7) Saute until onion becomes soft.
8) Add the seasoning into sambar .
9) mix well and cook for 5 minutes . Serve.
