Urulaikilangu kulambu/ potato moong dal kulambu

Urulaikilangu kulambu recipe with step by step pictures 


              Urulaikilangu kulambu is a sidedish for idli,  dosa,  chapathi,  poori,  uttapam,  idiayapam.  I used moong dal in this recipe.  You can add toor dal too.  When i made this recipe,  i felt that it tastes like 50% of sambar and 50% of kurma.  I liked it very much.  Try it and let me know.

Ingredients  :

.  Potatoes - 3 medium( chopped into cubes)
.  moong dal  - 1 cup 
.  Onion - 1 big onion ( finely chopped)
.  tomato - 1 medium ( finely chopped)
.  Turmeric powder  - 1/2 tsp 
.  Sambar powder - 1 tblsp 
.  Garam masala - 1/2 tblsp 
.  Curry leaves  - 1 sprig 
.  Cinnamon - 2 
.  Cloves - 4
.  Cumin seeds - 1 tsp 
.  oil - 2 tblsp 
.  Salt to taste 
.  Coriander leaves to garnish 

To grind: 
.  coconut - 3 tblsp 
.  Green chilli - 1
.  garlic cloves - 4
.  fennel seeds - 1 tsp 

Method  :

       1.  Grind coconut, fennel seeds,  green chilli and garlic in a mixer jar.  Keep it aside. 
       2.  In a pressure cooker,  add moong dal, chopped potatoes , 2 cups of water and turmeric powder. Pressure cook for 3 whistles. Mash it roughly.  Keep it aside. 
      3.  Heat oil in a kadai,  add cinnamon,  cloves and cumin seeds. After it crackle,  add chopped onion and curry leaves. Saute until translucent. 
      4.  Add chopped tomato.  Saute until mashy. 
      5.  Add salt,  garam masala and sambar powder. Mix well.  Add the mashed dal and potato. After it gets roll boil,  add coconut paste.  Mix well and cook for 7 min in medium flame.  Garnish with coriander leaves. serve.

         1) Take the ingredients given under to grind in a mixer jar. 


        2) Grind to a smooth paste. 


       3) In a pressure cooker,  take moong dal,  potatoes , turmeric powder and water. 


      4) Pressure cook for 3 whistles. mash it and keep it aside. 


       5) Heat oil in a kadai.  Add cinnamon,  cloves,  cumin seeds. 


       6) After it splutters,  add chopped onion,  curry leaves. 


       7) Saute until it becomes translucent .


        8) Add chopped tomato. 


        9) Saute until mashy.  Add salt,  sambar powder and garam masala. 


        10) Mix it well.  Add Mashed dal and potato with 1 cup of water. 


        11) cook for few min until roll boil.  Add coconut paste. 



        12) Mix well and cook for 7 min in medium flame. 


        13) Garnish with coriander leaves. 


       14) serve.
