Aloo palak gravy / potato spinach gravy / sidedish for chapathi

Aloo palak gravy recipe with step by step pictures 


               Aloo palak gravy is a healthy and tasty sidedish for Indian flat breads like Chapathi, naan, roti, parathas.  It is rich in iron as we have added palak in it.  The palak ( palak keerai)  gives you nice colour and taste to the gravy.  This gravy is one of my daughter's favorite.  She loves the colour and texture of the gravy.  

               This aloo palak gravy is a better option to include spinach in kids food.  Most of the kids doesn't like to eat spinach (keerai)  but they loves potatoes.  This gravy is very smooth as we grind the veggies in it and it is easy to feed the toddlers too.  Do try at your home and sure you love it.  Check out the aloo palak gravy recipe below with step by step pictures.

Ingredients   : 


.   Palak / palak keerai   -  1 bunch 
.   Aloo/ potato  -  3 medium sized
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized (roughly chopped) 
.   Tomato  -  1 medium sized  (roughly chopped)  
.   Ginger  -  2 inch piece
.   Garlic cloves  -  6 nos. 
.   Green chillies  -  2  (as per your taste,  add more if required) 
.   Oil  -  2 tblsp
.   Cumin seeds/ jeera  -  1 tsp
.   Turmeric powder   -  1/2 tsp
.   Garam masala  -  2 tsp
.   Salt to taste
.   Kasuri methi  -  2 tsp 


Method  : 


            1.  Pressure cook the potatoes for 2 whistles.  Peel the skin.  Chopped into cubes.  Remove the stem of palak keerai.  Rinse it.  Keep it aside. 

          2. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add roughly chopped onion, tomato, ginger, garlic and green chillies.  Saute until it gets cooked.  

          3. Add palak.  Saute until it shrinks.  Let it cool and grind it to smooth paste in a mixer jar.  

         4. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add cumin seeds.  After it sizzle,  add potatoes.  Saute for a min.  Add ground paste.  Add turmeric powder, garam masala and salt.  

        5.  Mix well and add 1 cup of water.  Cook in medium flame for 5 -  10 mins.  Add crushed kasuri methi.  Mix it and cook for a min.  Switch off the flame.  Aloo palak gravy is ready.

Let it cool and transfer to the mixer jar


Grind it to a smooth paste

Add cumin seeds


After it sizzle,  add potatoes


Saute for a min


Add the ground spinach puree


Add turmeric powder, garam masala and salt


Mix well and add 1 cup of water


Cook in medium flame for 5 -  10 mins


Add crushed kasuri methi


Mix well and cook for a min.  Switch off the flame


Tasty and healthy aloo palak gravy is ready
