chayote kootu/ Chow chow kootu

Chayote kootu recipe with step by step pictures 


            Chayote(chow chow) is a vegetable having more water.  It is very important to take more water in summer.  This chayote is one of the vegetable that is good for summer. I usually make chayote sambar or poriyal.  Today i made it in a kootu recipe.  Its very tasty and healthy.  Hope you like it and give it a try.

Ingredients  :

.  chayote - 1 ( chopped into cubes)
.  Moong dal - 1 cup 
.  Chana dal - 2 tblsp 
.  onion - 1 medium sized (chopped lengthwise )
.  green chillies - 2 
.  Garlic cloves  - 6 
.  turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp 


To grind: 
.  coconut - 1/2 cup grated 
.  Cumin seeds - 1 tsp 

To temper :
.  oil - 1 tblsp 
.  Mustard seeds - 1 tsp 
.  Urad dal - 1/2 tsp 
.  Curry leaves - 1 sprig 
.  Dry red Chilli - 2 
. Asafoeitida - 1 pinch 

Method :

         1. In a pressure cooker,  add moong dal, chana dal,  onion,  green chillies,  chayote, garlic and turmeric powder. Pressure cook for 3 whistles. Gently mash it with laddle. 
        2.  Grind coconut and cumin seeds to a smooth paste. Mix it into mashed dal. 
       3.  Cook for 2 min.  Temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves,  asafoeitida  and dry red Chillies. Serve. 


Pictorial :

          1) Take moong dal, chana dal,  chayote, onion, green chillies, garlic and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker. 


          2) Add 2 cup of water to it.


           3) Pressure cook for 3 whistles. 


             4) Grind coconut and cumin seeds to a smooth paste. 


           5) Gently mash the dal and add the coconut paste.



           6) Cook for 2 min. 


           6) Temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, curry leaves,  dry red Chillies and asafoeitida. 



            7) Serve.
