Cabbage kootu recipe with step by step pictures 


               Cabbage kootu (muttaikose kootu) is a south-indian recipe which is served with steamed rice.  It is a very easy recipe that can be cooked very quick and tastes delicious.  This recipe is not spicy but tastes too good that is served for kids too.  Kootu is one of the recipe in traditional tamilnadu hindu wedding.  Give it a try.

Ingredients  :

.  Cabbage  -  1 cup (chopped) 
.  Moong dal  -  1 /2 cup 
.  Onion  -  1 small onion  (chopped roughly) 
.  Green chillies  -  2
.  Turmeric powder  -  1/2 tsp
.  Coconut  -  3 tblsp (grated) 
.  Cumin seeds  -  1 tsp 

To temper :

.  Oil  -  2 tsp
.  Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp
.  Urad dal  -  1/2 tsp
.  Curry leaves  -  1 sprig
.  Dry red chillies  -  3 
.  Asoefoetida  -  1 pinch 


Method  :

        1. Wash the moong dal.  Add cabbage,  green chillies,  onion and turmeric powder along with  1 cup of water. 

      2. Pressure cook for 2 whistles.  After pressure releases,  gently mix it with a laddle. Add salt to it. 

     3. Grind Coconut and cumin seeds with little water.  Add it to dal. 

     4. Cook for 5-10 mins.  Temper with the ingredients given under to temper.  Cabbage kootu is ready. 

Pictorial  :

         1) Wash moong dal. 


        2) Add chopped Cabbage, onion,  green chillies and turmeric powder. 


       3) Add 1 cup of water. 


      4) Pressure cook for 2 whistles. 


     5) In the mean time,  take grated coconut and cumin seeds in a mixer jar. 


       6) Grind it to a smooth paste by adding little water. 


         7) Add Coconut paste to cooked dal. 


         8) Gently mix it with a laddle and add salt to it. 


        9) Cook for 5-10 mins. 


       10) Temper with the ingredients given under to temper. 


       11) Pour this tempering into dal. 


       12) Mix it well. 


       13) Cabbage kootu is ready to be served. 



Note :

           The consistency of the kootu must be little thick.
