Thattai payaru sadam recipe with step by step pictures 


          Thattai payaru sadam is a one - pot recipe and it is very easy to cook.  This rice is one of my favourite from my childhood.  My mom used to make this black eyed pea rice for my lunch box.  It is very flavourful as we add freshly ground jeera,  pepper and chillies.  Try this at once and sure you love it.  Check out the recipe below with step by step pictures.

Ingredients   : 


.  Thattai payaru / bleck eyed pea  -  1/2 cup 
.   Rice  -  1 cup
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized (sliced) 
.   Tomato  -  1 medium sized ( finely chopped) 
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Turmeric powder   -  1 tsp
.   Oil  -  1 tblsp
.   Mustard seeds   -  1 tsp 
.   Salt to taste 

To grind  : 

.   Jeera/ cumin seeds  -  2 tsp
.   Black pepper   -  1 tsp
.   Garlic cloves  -   6 
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Red chillies  -  4 ( as per your taste) 


Method  : 


            1. Soak black eyed pea (thattai payaru)  overnight or about 8 hours.  Soak rice for 30 mins.

           2. Grind the ingredients given under to grind in a mixer jar to a coarse paste without adding water.

          3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker.  Add mustard seeds.  After it splutters,  add onion and curry leaves.  Saute until translucent.

         4. Add tomato, turmeric powder and salt.  Saute until mushy.  Add ground powder.  Saute for a min.  Add thattai payaru.  Give it a mix.

         5. Add water.  After it gets to roll boil,  add rice.  Mix well.  Cover with lid.  Pressure cook for 2 whistles.

        6. After pressure releases, fluff the rice.  Tasty thattai payaru sadam is ready.

               Soak thattai payaru (black eyed pea)  overnight or about 8 hours


Soak rice for 30 mins.  Rinse and strain the rice.  Keep it aside


Take the ingredients given under to grind in a mixer jar


Grind it to a coarse paste without adding water


Heat oil in a pressure cooker 


Add mustard seeds


After it splutters,  add chopped onion and curry leaves.  Saute until translucent 


Add chopped tomato.  Saute for few secs


Add turmeric powder and salt 


Saute until mushy


Add ground paste.  Saute for a min


Add thattai payaru 


Mix well for a min


Add water (add 2 cups of water for 1 cup of rice) 


Let it comes to roll boil


Add rice. Mix well.  Cover with lid


Pressure cook for 2 whistles 


After pressure releases,  fluff the rice


Tasty and healthy thattai payaru sadam is ready to be served
