Vazhaithandu poriyal recipe with step by step pictures 


                  Vazhaithandu (plantain stem)  is a healthy vegetable which contains more water.  It is very good for stomach ache.  It is taken often to avoid stone forming in kidney.  Vazhaithandu poriyal is a easy to cook recipe but cleaning vazhaithandu takes little time.  Removing the fibre (threads)  in vazhaithandu is a must.  Otherwise it wont good while eating.  Do try at your home and be healthy.

Ingredients   :

.   Vazhaithandu   -  1 cup ( chopped into small cubes) 
.   Split moong dal  -  1 tblsp (soaked) 
.   Oil  -   1 tblsp
.   Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Urad dal  -  1/2 tsp
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized ( finely chopped) 
.   Dry red chillies   -  2 
.   Turmeric powder   -  1 tsp
.   Salt to taste
.   Grated coconut   -  3 tblsp


Method  :


            1.  Remove the outer layer of vazhaithandu.  Cut it into disc shaped.  Remove the threads.  Chop it into small cubes.  

           2.  Soak it in buttermilk or water to avoid discoloration.  Soak  split moong dal in water for 30 mins.  

          3. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds, urad dal.  After it splutters,  add onion,  curry leaves, dry red chillies and soaked moong dal.  

          4. Saute until onion becomes translucent.  Add chopped vazhaithandu and turmeric powder.  Saute for 2 mins.  

          5. Add a cup of water and required salt.  Mix well.  Cook covered until water dries.  

          6. Add grated coconut.  Toss well for a min.  Vazhaithandu poriyal is ready.

Try to remove it using your finger


Chop it into small cubes and soak it in buttermilk or in water to avoid discoloration 


Soak split moong dal in water for 20 -  30 mins


Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds and urad dal 


After it sizzle,  add finely chopped onion, curry leaves, dry red chillies and soaked moong dal 


Saute until onion becomes translucent 


Add chopped vazhaithandu and turmeric powder 


Saute for 2 mins


Add a cup of water and required salt


Cover and cook in medium flame until water gets dried


Add grated coconut 


Toss well for a min.  Turn off the flame


Tasty and healthy vazhaithandu poriyal is ready
