Tomato rice (tawa tomato rice) recipe with step by step pictures 


                 Tomato rice is a simple variety rice recipe of south-india.  It is one of the famous lunch box recipes in tamilnadu.  This recipe can be made with leftover rice or with fresh steamed rice.  Just make some tomato thokku and add cooked rice.  Mix it and your tawa tomato rice is ready.  It can be served with any poriyal or simply with some papads.

Ingredients  :

.  Cooked rice   -  2 cup 
.  Tomatoes  -  3 medium sized (finely chopped) 
.  Onion  -  1 big sized (finely chopped) 
.  Curry leaves   -  1 sprig 
.  Ginger garlic paste   -  1 tblsp 
.  Turmeric powder  -  1 pinch
.  Chilli powder  -  2 tsp 
.  Salt to taste 
.  Sesame oil  -  2 tblsp 
.  Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp 
.  Urad dal  -  1 tsp 
.  Chana dal  -  1 tsp 


Method  : 

           1. Heat oil.  Add mustard seeds, urad dal and channa dal.  Let it sizzle and turns to golden brown.  

          2. Add chopped onion,  curry leaves.  Saute until translucent.  Add ginger garlic paste.  Saute until raw smell goes out.  

         3. Add chopped tomatoes followed by turmeric powder and salt.  Saute until mushy.  Add chilli powder.  Saute and cook until oil comes out. 

        4. Add cooked rice.  Mix well.  Serve.  


Pictorial   : 

         1) Heat oil in a kadai. 


        2) Add mustard seeds,  urad dal and chana dal. 


       3) After it splutters and turns to golden brown,  add finely chopped onion and curry leaves.  


       4) Saute until translucent. 


       5) Add ginger garlic paste.  Saute until raw smell goes out. 


       6) Add chopped tomatoes.  


       7) Add turmeric powder and salt. 


        8) Saute until it becomes mushy. 


       9) Add chilli powder. 


       10) Saute and cook until oil oozes out. 


      11) Add cooked rice. 


      12) Mix well.  Check for salt.  If required add it now.  


      13) Tomato tice is ready. 

Note  :

         Adjust the quantity of chilli powder upto your taste. 

         Adding sesame oil gives you nice taste and aroma to this recipe.
