Mullangi sambar recipe with step by step pictures
Mullangi (raddish) sambar is a south-indian dish, especially tamilnadu recipe. Raddish is one of the ideal vegetable to make sambar. I like the aroma of raddish sambar. This is an accompaniment for rice in south-indian vegetarian meal. Whatever the traditional festive meal, sambar hits most of the time. Do try this recipe.

Ingredients :
. Raddish /mullangi - 2 medium sized
. Toor dal - 1 cup
. Onion - 1 medium sized (chopped lengthwise)
. Tomato - 1 medium sized (chopped lengthwise)
. Dry red chillies - 2
. Curry leaves - 1 sprig
. Asoafoetida/ hing - 1/2 tsp
. Oil - 1 tblsp
. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
. Urad dal - 1 tsp
. Sambar powder - 1 tblsp
. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
. Tamarind puree - 2 tblsp
. Salt to taste
Method :
1. Cut the edges of the raddish and peel the skin. Slice into round shapes( you can chop it in your way). Keep it aside.
2. Wash toor dal and take it in a pressure cooker along with 2 cups of water and turmeric powder. Pressure cook dal and mash it well.
3. Heat oil. Add mustard seeds and urad dal. After it sizzle, add onion, curry leaves, dry red chillies and hing.
4. Saute until onion becomes translucent. Add tomato. Add salt and turmeric powder. Saute for a min.
5. Add raddish. Saute for 2 mins. Add sambar powder. Mix well. Add enough water and cook until veggies are half-cooked.
6. Add mashed dal and tamarind puree. Cook for 5-10 mins in medium flame. Tasty raddish sambar is ready.
4. Saute until onion becomes translucent. Add tomato. Add salt and turmeric powder. Saute for a min.
5. Add raddish. Saute for 2 mins. Add sambar powder. Mix well. Add enough water and cook until veggies are half-cooked.
6. Add mashed dal and tamarind puree. Cook for 5-10 mins in medium flame. Tasty raddish sambar is ready.
Pictorial :

2) chop the raddish in round shapes. (you can chop it in your way)

5) Mash it with a laddle or traditional matthu.
6) Heat oil in a kadai.
7) Add mustard seeds and urad dal.
8) After it splutters and turns to golden brown, add chopped onion, curry leaves, dry red chillies and hing. Saute until onion becomes translucent.
9) Add chopped tomato. Saute for few secs.
10) Add salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Saute until it becomes mushy.
11) Add chopped raddish.
12) Saute for a min.
13) Add sambar powder.
14) Mix it well. (do not burnt the spice powder)
15) Add 2 cups of water.
16) Cook until veggies are half-cooked.
17) Add mashed dal.
18) Add tamarind puree.
19) Cook for about 5 - 10 mins until veggies cooked well. Switch off the flame.
20) Raddish sambar is ready to be served.
12) Saute for a min.
13) Add sambar powder.
14) Mix it well. (do not burnt the spice powder)
15) Add 2 cups of water.
16) Cook until veggies are half-cooked.
17) Add mashed dal.
18) Add tamarind puree.
19) Cook for about 5 - 10 mins until veggies cooked well. Switch off the flame.
20) Raddish sambar is ready to be served.
