Rava kichadi recipe with step by step pictures 


           Rava (sooji)  kichadi is a south-indian breakfast recipe. It is a easy and quick recipe which is similar to Rava upma but with some added spices and veggies.  It is one of the dishes in most of the South-indian wedding breakfast.  It tastes yummy with a scoop of Coconut chutney .  I often cook rava kichadi at my home for breakfast.  It takes less time to cook and fulfills your tastebuds. Ingredients   : 


.   Rava / sooji  -  1 cup
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized (finely chopped) 
.   Tomato  -  1 small sized (finely chopped) 
.   Ginger garlic paste   -  1 tblsp
.   Veggies (carrot, potato, peas)   -  1 cup (finely chopped) 
.   Oil  -  1 tblsp
.   Fennel seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Cinnamon  -  2 
.   Cloves  -  4
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Green chillies  -  2 
.   Turmeric powder  -  1 tsp
.   Salt to taste 

Method  : 


            1.  Take rava in a kadai.  Roast it until you get the aroma.  Transfer to a plate. 

           2. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add whole spices.  After it crackle,  add onion,  curry leaves, green chillies.  Saute until onion becomes translucent. 

          3. Add ginger garlic paste.  Saute until raw smell goes out.  Add tomato.  Saute until mushy. 

          4. Add turmeric powder and salt.  Saute for a min.  Add veggies.  Saute for 2 mins.  Add 1/2 cup of water.  Cook in medium flame until veggies gets cooked. 

         5. Add 3 cups of water.  After roll boil,  add rava.  Stir continuously.  Mix well.  Cover with lid.  

         6. Cook in low flame for 2  - 3 mins.  Mix well.  Switch off the flame.  Rava kichadi is ready.

                        Take rava in a kadai


Roast the rava in low flame until aroma comes out ( do not burnt the rava,  saute continuously) 


Transfer to a plate


In the same kadai,  heat oil.  Add cinnamon, cloves and fennel seeds


After it splutters,  add finely chopped onion, curry leaves and green chillies.  Saute until onion becomes translucent 


Add ginger garlic paste.  Saute until raw smell goes out


Add finely chopped tomato


Add salt and turmeric powder 


Saute until tomato becomes mushy


Add veggies


Saute for 2  -  3 mins


Add 1/2 cup of water


Cook in medium flame until veggies gets cooked well


Add water ( add 3 cups of water for 1 cup of rava) 


Let it comes to roll boil


Add roasted rava.  Stir continuously while adding rava to avoid lumps


Mix well for few secs


Cover with lid.  Cook in low flame for 2 mins.  Mix it well.  Switch off the flame


Yummy rava kichadi is ready to be served
