Poosanikai (pumpkin)  poriyal recipe with step by step pictures 


               Poosanikai poriyal is a delicious and yummy sidedish for rice in south-indian meal.  It is a easy to cook recipe with only few ingredients.  It tastes little sweet as the pumpkin has some sweet taste itself.  This poriyal is most commonly made for vegetarian feast in my home.  Do try this tasty and healthy poriyal at your home.

Ingredients   :


.   Pumpkin/ poosanikai  -  2 cup (cubed) 
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized (finely chopped) 
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Green chillies  -  2 (as per your taste) 
.   Oil  -  1 tblsp
.   Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Urad dal  -  1 tsp
.   Turmeric powder   -  1/2 tsp
.   Salt to taste 
.   Grated coconut   -  2 tblsp 

Method  :


               1.  Peel the skin and remove the seeds of pumpkin.  Chop it into 1 inch cubes. 

               2. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds and urad dal.  After it splutters,  add onion,  curry leaves and green chillies.  Saute until translucent. 

               3. Add cubed pumpkin.  Saute for 2 mins.  Add salt and turmeric powder.  Mix well.  Add 1/4 cup of water.  Cover with lid and cook for 10 mins in low flame.  

              4. Add grated coconut.  Toss well.  Switch off the flame.  Poosanikai poriyal is ready.

Heat oil in a kadai


Add mustard seeds,  urad dal


After it splutters and turns to golden brown,  add finely chopped onion, curry leaves and green chillies


Saute until onion becomes translucent 


Add cubed pumpkin


Saute for 2 min


Add turmeric powder and salt 


Saute for a min.  Add 1/4 cup of water. 


Cover with lid and cook for 10 mins in low flame until pumpkin becomes soft


Add grated coconut 


Toss well for a min.  Turn off the flame


Tasty and healthy poosanikai poriyal is ready to be served
