Thakkali kulambu recipe with step by step pictures 


                 Thakkali kulambu is a sidedish recipe for idli,  dosa and idiyappam and as well as an accompaniment for rice.   It is a tangy and tasty sidedish.  It is a very easy and quick recipe.  It can be done within 15 mins.  You dont need any other vegetables and tomatoes alone gives you great taste.  It is a version of Onion tomato thokku  which i have already shared.  I liked it so much for the tanginess.  Try this recipe and sure you like it.

Ingredients   :


.   Tomato   -  4 rippen ( finely chopped) 
.   Small onion/ shallots  -  8 nos. ( sliced) 
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Hing  -  1 pinch
.   Oil  -  1 tblsp
.   Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Urad dal  -  1 tsp
.   Cumin seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Dry red chillies  -  2 (broken) 
.   Turmeric powder  -  1 /2  tsp
.   Chilli powder  -  2 tsp
.   Coriander powder  -  2 tsp
.   Salt to taste
.   Rice flour  -  1 tblsp

Method  : 


           1.  Heat oil.  Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and urad dal.  After it crackle,  add onion,  curry leaves,  dry red chillies and hing. 

          2. Saute until onion becomes translucent.  Add tomatoes. Saute for a min.  Add turmeric powder and salt. 

          3. Saute until tomatoes becomes mushy.  Add chilli powder and coriander powder.  Saute until oil separates. 

         4. Add water and cook for 5 mins.  Take rice flour.  Add water and make a slurry.  Add it to kulambu. 

         5. Mix well and cook for 5 mins until oil oozes out.  Thakkali kulambu is ready.  Turn off the stove.

                     Heat oil in a kadai


Add mustard seeds, urad dal and cumin seeds


After it splutters and turns to golden brown,  add sliced shallots,  curry leaves,  dry red chillies and hing


Saute until onion becomes translucent 


Add tomatoes.  


Add salt and turmeric powder


Saute until tomatoes becomes mushy


Add chilli powder and coriander powder


Saute until oil separates


Add 1 cup pf water


Cook for 5 mins


Take rice flour 


Add water and make a slurry.  Add it to kulambu 


Cook for 5 mins until oil oozes out.  Turn off the stove


Tasty and tangy thakkali kulambu is ready to be served
