Fish kulambu recipe with step by step pictures 


                 Fish kulambu is an accompaniment for rice in south-indian non-vegetarian meal.  Fish is a healthy meat that is good for everyone.  Fish fry has some oil content in it.  But fish kulambu is healthier as it contains less oil.  It is a very tasty kulambu recipe of my mom.  My daughter likes this kulambu very much and i often cook it for her.  Fish cooks very quick and you can cook it in 5 mins and it is more than enough so it must be add atlast only.  Check for salt before adding fish.  Do not stir as it might get broken.

Ingredients   : 


.   Fish -  1/2 kg
.   Small onion/ shallots  -  15 nos.
.   Garlic cloves  -  8
.   Tomato   -  1 medium sized (roughly chopped)
.   Grated coconut   -  3 tblsp
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Kulambu powder  -  2 tblsp
.   Tamarind puree  -  3 tblsp
.   Oil  -  2 tblsp
.   Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Urad dal  -  1/2 tsp
.   Fenugreek seeds  -  1/2 tsp
.   Salt to taste

Method  :


           1. Wash and clean the fish pieces throughly.  

           2. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add garlic cloves,  shallots and tomato.  Saute until it gets cooked.  

          3. Add grated coconut and curry leaves.  Saute for few secs.  Switch off the flame.  Let it cool and transfer it to the mixer jar. 

         4. Add kulambu powder.   Grind it to a fine paste by adding little water.  

         5. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds,  urad dal and fenugreek seeds.  After it crackle,  add ground paste.  Saute for few secs.  

         6. Add 1 1/2 cup water and salt.  Cook for 7-8 mins.  Add tamarind puree. Cook for 5 mins.  

          7. Add fish pieces.  Cook for 5 - 8 mins in medium flame.  Fish kulambu is ready.

Saute for few secs.  Switch off the flame


Let it gets cooled and transfer it to a mixer jar


Add kulambu powder


Grind it to a fine paste by adding little water


Heat oil in a kadai. 


Add mustard seeds, urad dal and fenugreek seeds 


After it crackle,  add ground paste.  Saute for few secs


Add 1 1/2 cup of water and salt


Cook for 5-8 mins


Add tamarind puree


Cook for 5 mins


Add the fish pieces


Cook for 5 mins. Switch off the flame 


Fish kulambu is ready to be served
