Chow chow sambar recipe with step by step pictures 


            Sambar is a ultimate recipe that goes well with rice as well as idli,  dosas.  Sambar can be made with varieties of vegetables like drumstick,  carrot, beans, pumpkin,  brinjal, flat beans,  raddish.  Today i have made sambar with chayote (chow chow).  Chayote is a vegetable which contains more water content and it is very healthy.  I have already posted the Chayote kootu.  Check out that too.

Ingredients   :


.   Chow chow/ chayote  -  1 
.   Toor dal  -  1 cup 
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized ( sliced) 
.   Tomato  -  1 medium sized ( sliced) 
.   Oil  -  1 tblsp
.   Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Urad dal  -  1/2 tsp
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Dry red chillies   -  2
.   Hing / asafoetide  -  1/2 tsp
.   Turmeric powder  - 1 tsp
.    Sambar powder  -  1 tsp
.   Salt to taste 
.   Tamarind water  -  2 tblsp


Method  : 


            1. Wash and peel the skin of chow chow.  Cut into two halves.  Remove the seed and thick white part.  Chop into cubes. 

           2. Wash toor dal.  Pressure cook for 3 whistles along with turmeric powder and 2 cups of water. Mash the cooked dal. Soak tamarind and make tamarind water. 

           3. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds,  urad dal.  After it crackle,  add curry leaves, dry red chillies and hing. 

          4. After it sizzle,  add onion.  Saute until translucent.  Add tomato.  Saute for a min.  Add chayote.  Saute for 2 mins. 

         5. Add sambar powder and salt.  Mix well for few secs.  Add water.  Cook for 5-8 mins.  Add mashed dal and tamarind water.  

        6. Mix well and cook for 10 mins.  Tasty chow chow sambar is ready.  Turn off the flame.

              Peel the skin of chayote.  


Cut into two halves.  Remove the seed and thick white part around it. 


Chopped into cubes.  Keep it aside


Wash toor dal.  Take it in a pressure cooker


Add 2 cups of water and 1 tsp of turmeric powder


Pressire cook for 3-4 whistles 


Mash well with a laddle.  Keep it aside


Soak tamarind in hot water for 5 mins


Make tamarind water.  Keep it aside


Heat oil in a kadai


Add mustard seeds,  urad dal. 


After it splutters,  add curry leaves, dry red chillies and hing


After it sizzle,  add onion.  Saute until translucent 


Add tomato.  Saute for a min


Add chopped chow chow


Saute for 2 mins


Add sambar powder and salt 


Mix well for few secs.  (Do not burnt the spice powder) 


Add 2 cups of water. 


Cook for 5-8 mins


Add mashed dal and tamarind water


Cook for 10 mins 


Tasty chayote sambar is ready
