Samba rava upma recipe with step by step pictures 


             Samba rava upma is a south-indian breakfast recipe.  It is often cooked in most of the homes as it is very easy to cook and healthy too.  My mom makes it for my dad and i liked it till my childhood.   It is very famous in kongunadu cooking. 

          This samba rava upma can be served with any chutneys of your taste.  I usually served it with Coconut fried gram chutney. In my childhood,  my mom used to feed me this samba rava upma with sugar.  It tastes too yummy.  Try this recipe and upma must be your one of the breakfast recipe.  Even upma haters will love it.  You can add some veggies like carrot or beans to make it even healthier.

Ingredients   : 


.   Samba rava  -  1 cup 
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized (finely chopped) 
.   Tomato  -  1 small sized ( finely chopped) (optional) 
.   Dry red chillies  -  4 broken
.   Curry leaves   -  1 sprig
.   Coriander leaves   -  1 tblsp (finely chopped)  
.   Oil  -  1 tblsp
.   Mustard seeds  -  1 tsp
.   Urad dal  -  1 tsp
.   Channa dal  -  1 tsp
.   Hing  -  1 pinch
.   Salt to taste 


Method  : 


           1. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal.  After it crackle,  add onion,  dry red chillies, hing and curry leaves. 

          2. Saute until onion becomes translucent.  Add tomato.  Saute for a min.  Add salt.  Mix well.  Add boiling water.  ( for 1 cup of samba rava,  add 2 cups of water) 

         3. Add samba rava.  Mix well.  Keep the flame to low.  Cover with lid.  Cook for 4 - 5 mins.  Stir in between.  After all the water dried off,  add chopped coriander leaves.  

        4. Mix well.  Switch off the flame.  Serve hot.

                      Heat oil in a kadai

After it splutters and turns to golden brown,  add finely chopped onion, dry red chillies, hing and curry leaves 


Saute until onion becomes translucent 


Add chopped tomato 


Add salt.  


Saute for a min


Add boiling water ( for 1 cup of samba rava,  add 2 cups of water) 


Add samba rava


Mix well


Cover with lid and keep the flame to low.  Cook for 4-5 mins.  Stir in between.  (otherwise,  upma might get stick to the bottom) 


After water dries off,  Add finely chopped coriander leaves 


Mix well.  Switch off the flame


Tasty,  healthy samba rava upma is ready.  Serve hot
