Masala dosa recipe with step by step pictures 


             Masala dosa is one of the most popular and most favorite breakfast of tamilnadu.  It is most commonly available for breakfast in all the restaurants.  It is made with the same dosa batter which is used to make dosas and is filled with some potato masala and so it is named as masala dosa.  It is my most favorite breakfast from my childhood.  

             Masala dosa is served with Coconut chutney,  Coriander chutney,  Tomato chutney and Sambar.   The Potato masala is made with the usual method of making Potato podimas.  I have already shared the recipes using Potato podimas like,  Potato bonda and Potato masala for poori.  Check that recipes too.

Ingredients   : 


For Potato masala  : 

.   Potato  -  4 
.   Onion  -  1 medium sized (finely chopped) 
.   Green chilli  -  2 (finely chopped) 
.  Curry leaves   -  2 sprig (finely chopped) 
.   Capsicum  -  1/2 (finely chopped) (optional) 
.   Oil  -  1 tblsp
.   Cumin seeds  -  1 tsp 
.   Turmeric powder  -  1 tsp
.   Salt to taste 

For making dosa : 

.   Idli dosa batter   -  as required 
.   Oil  -  to drizzle over dosas

Method  : 


           1. Boil the Potato.  Peel the skin.  Mash roughly.  Keep it aside. 

          2. Heat oil in a kadai.  Add cumin seeds.  After it sizzle,  add onion,  curry leaves ,  capsicum and green chillies.  Saute until onion becomes translucent. 

        3. Add turmeric powder and salt.  Saute for a min.  Add mashed Potato.  Mix well.  Cover with lid.  Cook in low flame for 3  - 4 mins.  Mix well.  Potato masala is ready. 

       4. Heat dosa tawa.  Pour a laddle of dosa batter.  Flatten it.  Drizzle a tsp of oil around it.  Cover with lid.  Cook for a min until dosa gets cooked.  

       5. Add a laddle of Potato masala over the dosa.  Wrap the dosa.  Take it out.  Serve with chutney or sambar.

Add finely chopped green chillies and capsicum.  Saute for a min


Add turmeric powder and salt 


Saute for a min


Add mashed Potato 


Mix well.  Cover with lid.  Cook for 3 - 4 mins in low flame.  Potato masala is ready 


Heat dosa tawa.  Pour a laddle of dosa batter.  Drizzle a tsp of oil.  Cover with lid.  


Cook for a min until dosa gets cooked ( you can see the dosa becomes golden brown and crisp) . Do not flip the dosa


Add a laddle of Potato masala over the dosa


Wrap the dosa gently.  Take it out 


Masala dosa is now ready to serve.  Serve with chutneys or sambar
